How was your experience at YTranslations?

My internship experience with YTranslations has been very positive. My mentor, Iulita, has been very supportive, friendly and helpful whenever I have encountered any issues with the tasks that she set me.

As this is my second year of my internship with YTranslations, I have gained confidence in using the CAT tool, Memsource.

Constructive feedback has been provided throughout my translation work to allow me to improve. During my internship, I also had the opportunity to write an article, which I was given feedback on. I found this an interesting and enjoyable task.

What have I learned about the translation business?

I have learned that one has to be flexible within the translation business, depending on the project. Obviously, some tasks have a tight deadline, requiring a lot of input over a short time scale.

The translation work is varied, and I have had experience of translating documents in the fields of technology, law and healthcare, each with their own challenges.

Would I recommend the internship experience at YTranslations?

Yes, I would highly recommend the internship experience at YTranslations. The staff I have dealt with have all been cheerful and helpful, and even though I am only a university student, it has allowed me to gain real-life experience of the translation industry.

In addition, as someone who is a keen learner of languages, I have found that doing an internship at YTranslations is an excellent opportunity to expand my French and Spanish vocabulary.

During the internship, Iona completed the following activities:

  • Read given material and research industry-specific terminology
  • Ensure translated content conveys original meaning and tone
  • Deliver translations and run Quality checks by using Trados/Memsource/MemoQ/Across
  • Proofread translated texts for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy
  • Follow up with internal team members and clients to ensure translation meets their needs
  • Edit content with an eye toward maintaining its original format (e.g. font and structure)
  • Receive feedback of translation work from specialised linguists and implement it in the projects
  • Send marketing information to British companies (emails, Linkedin, etc)
  • Contact interested companies to present our business proposal
  • Create social media exposure to businesses by creating content
  • Write 1 blog post/2 weeks for our website regarding the translation industry
